Introduction to Giving

WHY should I support my church financially?”
“If I’m a new member or a firsttime giver, HOW do I start giving?”
WHAT are the expectations for giving?”
These are all good questions for
NEW membergivers (those who are new to the Christian faith and/or new to Advent Lutheran Church as Discovery Class grads), and….
EXISTING membergivers
Part of the mission statement of your Finance/Stewardship Committee is to encourage and remind both new and “old” that giving is a response to God’s generosity. Giving provides a sacrificial awareness that, in turn, allows the giving Christian to see their first fruits in action.

For those who are NEW to giving:
We give as a response to God’s generosity. (Just as we give of our time and talents, we also give of our money.) Our commitments of money express our love for God, our faith, and our dedication, as well as our desire to be faithful participants in God’s mission in our time and place.

“How do I start?”
Giving is a Call to Discipleship (same word origin as discipline).
“….as we discipline ourselves through prayer, worship and the practice of stewardship in all of life, we move more deeply into the life of discipleship and more joyfully into God’s gift of mission”
–Strong in Faith, Together in Mission, Nov, 2005
Giving is a commitment—
A commitment is our response of gratitude for the blessings of God… it reflects what we believe about God. It’s an expression of our faith, our good intentions put into good action. A commitment to God is not unlike all the other commitments in our lives… to our employer, our bank, and our utility company. We commit to God not to win favor or earn our salvation, but because God has given to us and continues to give. (Our church and its congregation is a living sign of God’s presence.)

“How much should I give?”
Make a personal decision to give every week and start with a percentage of your income, like 1% to 3%*. Remind yourself that you are giving back to God a “first fruit” offering*. Let it be an awakening challenge for you, not a burden! (As you give, you will discover that your giving is an investment BEYOND yourself and that you will discover life at a richer and deeper level)

For those who currently support Advent Lutheran with their financial gifts:
1. Ask yourself…. How does your giving grow out of your faith in Jesus Christ?
During our Strong in Faith campaign we were reminded that people give out of …… Gratitude, Responsibility, Loyalty, and Inward commitment to God.
2. When you prepare your weekly offering, ask God to bless your giving as God has blessed you. Ask God to use your gift to grow His kingdom, to bless our congregation’s mission work, and to leverage your gift (make it stronger in aggregate) through the faithful giving of others.

The mission and ministry of this congregation are powered by the Holy Spirit and by your giving. We give thanks to God for His faithful generosity and for blessing our ministry with your gifts of faith!

“Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough, you may share abundantly in every good work.”
2 Corinthians 9:78
“Now to Him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20
*The bible encourages “proportionate giving”… an intentional percentage of your income and resources (1 Corinthians 16:2).
*First fruits in action (see Exodus 23:16, 19 and 1 Corinthians 15:20)
