Serving our Local Community

Advent Lutheran has been an integral part of South County since 1973 and has always chosen to love and serve our community.  Advent’s Community Connections team is passionate about caring for those who are the most vulnerable in our neighborhood.  Our outreach activities are ongoing and are constantly changing.  Below are some examples of our community outreach activities.   If you would like to help, please contact the Community Connections Chairperson at or call the church office at 408-779-3551

Community Table

Community Table is a partnership between Advent Lutheran and four other Morgan Hill churches with Martha’s Kitchen, a San Jose soup kitchen, to feed the hungry in the community.  The churches provide the location and volunteers, and Martha’s Kitchen provides the meal free of charge.  The free dinners are offered at Advent on Tuesday evening , and at the other churches on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings every week.

God’s Work. Our Hands. Sunday

God’s Work. Our Hands Sunday on September 9 is an exciting and important opportunity for Advent to come together with nearly 10,000 other ELCA congregations working in solidarity across the country to do God’s work in the world. This is a dedicated day of service for Advent Lutheran.  The date for 2019 is Sunday, September 8.

Morgan Hill Safe Parking Program

Advent Lutheran is collaborating with the City and Police Department of Morgan Hill along with other faith communities to provide a respite from the streets and supportive services for eight local families currently living in cars/RV’s with a goal of moving them towards more stable housing.

Quarterly Mission

Each quarter of every year, the Staff and Church Council vote on a mission or ministry that is considered worthy of the congregation’s interest, prayer and financial support. The Quarterly Mission can have local, regional or global focus.

Reach Out

‘Reach Out’ is a community food bank housed at St. Catherine’s in Morgan Hill.  At Advent, the Food of the Month Ministry highlights especially needed non-perishable foods requested by Reach Out.  All donations are taken to St. Catherine’s where the food bank is open for clients.

Senior Brown Bag Ministry

The Senior Brown Bag Ministry is held the first and third Thursday mornings of the month at advent.  Volunteers assist low income seniors in receiving a variety of staples, canned goods, and seasonal fruits and vegetables provided by Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.

Sew Seeds

The Sew Seeds sewing group constructs quilts for Lutheran World Relief which are passed to those in need.  Additionally, quilts are made for local ministries and also for for certain congregational uses.  Members of all ages come from Advent and our local community.  We meet in Room 2 every Tuesday 10:00 A.M.-3:00 P.M. with members drifting in and out as their time permits.  Read more about Sew Seeds…

To-Go Care Packs

This ministry provides bagged “lunches” packed by Advent volunteers and offered at the church for drop-in visitors needing a lunch.  The care packs are mainly used for Advent members to keep in their cars and give away to someone in need out in the community as the opportunity arises.  The Ziploc bags contain a water bottle, non-perishable snacks, a few toiletries and a resource list.
